Move from eco-anxiety to eco-action by becoming a Climate Philanthropist

Some days, it feels like climate change is a big, looming thing with no tangible solution in sight.

California on fire.

A heat dome in Seattle.

Makes you want to curl up in bed with a tub of ice cream and tune it out.

What has helped me with my climate concerns is focusing on the researchers and practitioners tirelessly working on making things better.

We call them Impact Stars.

When you shift from reading the Gloom and Doom headlines to helping these innovative researchers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, it’s an amazing feeling.

There are a million ways to be a climate philanthropist. At Impact Stars, we use a framework called Return on Impact (ROIM).

If you’re financially secure, Return on Impact (ROIM) beats Return on Investment (ROI) hands-down because it optimizes for climate action. Instead of tuning out the problem, you’re bringing solutions to life.

Another part of the Return on Impact calculus is more objective. It’s based on the value of the project in mitigating climate risk or solving the problem altogether. This gives you the confidence that you are allocating your funds wisely and strategically.

When the sequestration data is still not fully validated, we look for co-benefits: does this solution help with climate mitigation? Does it reduce drought and fire risk or increase biodiversity?

The truth is a strategic ‘no-strings-attached’ philanthropic gift can make the difference between climate research and development moving forward — or not.

Funding for the right research, demonstration, and scaling projects will exponentially increase the pace of progress.

Our work has taught us: there’s NO place for silver bullets, greenwashing or false hope. This stuff is hard. So we tell you the truth. Even when it’s not what you want to hear. Some projects fail. And that’s part of the process.

Many climate changemakers have given up cushy jobs and high-flying careers. And yet, they spend a lot of their time chasing funding for their work. That doesn’t make sense!

It will take all of us to band together to pull this off. Some of us give time and talent. Some of us give money and moral support. It all adds up.

So what role will you play at the Climate Table?

No matter your check size, your gifts are a vote of confidence in those working hard to restore the earth.

We’d be honored to play matchmaker connecting you to climate solutions that deliver the highest Return on Impact (ROIM) based on your goals and interests.

Inspired to write a bigger check? Do it in a way that will lead other philanthropists and government agencies to follow or join you. We’ll show you how.

Solving the climate crisis — yes, that’s the near-term goal.

But if we can do that in a way that regenerates our humanity and our planet, wouldn’t that be amazing? This is the North Star that guides all of our work.

I heard Larry Fink wrote a new letter about climate change.

I’m happy to hear that, but the truth is institutional investment will only invest at scale once philanthropy has led the way.
